Virtual Irrigation Academy

The Virtual Irrigation Academy (VIA) empowers irrigators with simple technology and people-centred learning. Farmers require information about the water and solutes in their soil, which is what VIA delivers.

VIA has developed the Chameleon soil moisture sensor, which is buried in the ground and connected to a light that indicates water levels: blue for adequate water, green for acceptable levels, and red for low moisture. These innovative sensors enable farmers and stakeholders to communicate and learn about water management, allowing for informed decision-making by combining new information with existing experience.

VIA has established production and quality control processes to enable these sensors to be made anywhere in the world.

“As an enterprise focused on delivering impact, VIA aims to identify opportunities to introduce our world-first innovations to farmers in low- and middle-income countries. India has over 21 million hectares of irrigated land and faces ongoing water scarcity issues, with smallholder farmers playing a vital role in food security and income for a significant portion of the population. Expanding into this market has the potential to greatly enhance the impact and benefits of VIA’s innovations.” – Simon Dyer, CEO
